Hawk Highlights
Drilling in 2008 intersected mineralized zones from 2.7 metres to 144 metres depth. These showings demonstrate continuity of mineralization and confirm significant near surface uranium. At least 5 nearby similar geophysical targets remain to be tested.
Drill holes intersected uranium mineralization including:
- 17 metres of .07% (1.54.lbs/tons) U3O8
including 5 metre of 0.14% (3.1 lbs/ton) U3O8
- 14 metres of 0.16% (3.52 lbs/ton) U3O8
including 6 metres of 0.31 (6.8 lbs /ton) U3O8
- 13 metres of 0.15% U3O8
including 2 metres of 0.29% (6.4 lbs/ton) U3O8 and
including and 2 metres of 0.31% (6.8 lbs/ton) U3O8
The Hawk prospect is one of a number of uranium targets on Uranium North's South Baker Project in Nunavut. The Hawk property was discovered in 1978 and explored by Noranda and a Noranda-Agip Canada joint venture until 1982. This property covers approximately 88,715-acres and consists of two permits contiguous with the east margin of Uranium North's South Baker property. Property highlights include two known mineralized zones which are likely structurally controlled, Hawk West and Hawk East Zones.
Work completed over the past two years by Uranium North included an airborne magnetic and radiometric survey, rock and soil sampling, geological mapping, and diamond drilling. This work is summarized below.
Summary of Exploration
Part of the 17,865 line kilometer airborne magnetic and radiometric survey completed by Terraquest Limited, at a line spacing of 100 metres, covers the Hawk prospect. This is the first comprehensive survey flown in the area since 1976. Several radiometric anomalies were identified near the known Hawk uranium prospect (see map below). These anomalies are 200-500 metres in diameter and include areas coincident with historic mineralized boulders and boulder samples collected in 2007 that have yielded U3O8 values ranging from less than 0.1% to 4.39%. Several of the radiometric anomalies were untested by previous explorers and will be the focus of future exploration. In addition, enzyme leach soil geochemistry acquired over the Hawk zone at 100m x 50m sample spacing, analyzed at Activation Laboratories Ltd., forms a coincident uranium anomaly up to 31 ppb, within a background of <5ppb, open in 3 directions.
Based on the results of the 2007 exploration program and three dimensional modeling of Historic drill-hole data, a drill program was planned for 2008. An initial six drill holes has been completed on Hawk West to verify the historical drill data and begin to test the extent of the uranium mineralization. Other nearby airborne radiometric anomalies were identified and will be targeted as similar mineralized zones.
Drilling intersected three uranium mineralized zones in two drill holes, confirming the presence of significant shallow U3O8 mineralization and providing key information on the orientation of a sizeable mineralized zone. Prior to Uranium North drilling at Hawk, uranium mineralization had not been intersected below 60 metres. These results extend mineralization to a depth of 144 metres and significantly expand the overall dimensions of the mineralized zone.
Vertical drill hole HL-01-08 intersected an upper five metre zone grading 0.05 % U3O8, a middle zone of 16.8 metres grading 0.07% U3O8 and a lower 14.3 metre zone grading 0.16% U3O8, including six metres of 0.31% U3O8 (see table below).
A second vertical drill hole, HL-02-08, which was collared 30 metres to the south intersected three similar zones: an upper four metre zone grading 0.05% U3O8, a middle three metre zone grading 0.08% U3O8, and a lower 12.5 metre zone grading 0.15% U3O8. The lower zone includes a two metre zone grading 0.31% U3O8 and an additional two metres with 0.29% U3O8 (see Table Below).

All intersections reported are down-hole, core-length intervals. The true thickness of mineralized zones is yet to be determined.
A third drill hole, HL-03-08, drilled 90 metres to the east at -65° to the west did not intersect significant U3O8 mineralization. Drilling suggests that the mineralized zone is steeply dipping.
Hawk mineralization occurs in fractured and brecciated volcanic rocks of the Christopher Island Formation and is commonly associated with chlorite, hematite and carbonate alteration. Drilling intersected rocks of this formation to 200 metres depth without intersecting basement rocks. Based on regional work, basement rocks represent another target for uranium on the property.
Plans for Hawk include modeling of historic and 2008 drill holes to better understand the orientation of the mineralization. Drilling is planned for 2009 on the Hawk target and will be designed to test along strike and down dip extension of the known mineralization.
Exploration History
Exploration for uranium in the eastern Baker Lake region began in the 1960's with Aberford Resources, and continued over the succeeding years (primarily the later 1970's and early 80's) by Urangesellschaft Canada Ltd., AGIP/NorEx joint venture, and E&B Explorations Ltd. These companies focused on the faulted contacts/unconformity between the Proterozoic supracrustal rocks of the Baker Lake Basin with the underlying Archean gneissic granitoids. Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys were performed including radiometric airborne surveys, mapping, prospecting, soil gridding, and to a moderate degree - drilling. Consequently, several prospective showings and anomalous boulder trains were discovered, including the Hawk prospect
Exploration drilling at the Hawk prospect was originally conducted by Noranda in 1978 to 1982. Thirty seven drill holes were completed. Eighteen of the holes were "winkie" size drill holes (130.52 metres) and 19 holes were BQ size (1653.23 metres). Fourteen of the holes did not penetrate deeper than 15 metres, 6 of which terminated in overburden. Numerous significant uranium mineralized intersections were encountered. This area coincides with more than 120 radioactive boulders with assays of 0.05% to 4.10% U3O8 on surface over a 40 by 220-metre area. Drill hole H-10-79 also averaged 0.18% MoS2 (molybdenite) over a 10 metre drill intercept.
The table below highlights the significant drill-hole data.

At the Hawk East Zone, nine holes were drilled and uranium mineralization was encountered in four holes suggesting a minimum 40 by 100-metre mineralized zone. Drill intercepts have yielded 0.09% and 0.065% over 1.0 and 2.2 metres respectively. Mineralization over significant drill intersections and substantial concentrations of uranium in two nearby locations on the property warranted further exploration by the Company.
